BONNYVILLE - Passionate, dedicated, and kind hearted - those are some of the words used to describe Dr. Bernard Brosseau Middle School teacher Rebecca Durocher.
They are also among the reasons why the Grade 6 teacher has been selected as this year’s LCSD nominee for the Alberta School Board Association’s Edwin Parr Award.
“Rebecca’s commitment to fostering a dynamic and engaging learning environment is evident in her classroom management skills and dedication to providing hands-on learning opportunities. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that her lessons are not only informative but also captivating, catering to diverse learning styles and abilities,” Principal Joe Marion noted in his letter of support for her nomination.
Prior to graduating from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Education, Durocher earned a college diploma in Animal Health Technology from Lakeland College.
In her first year at Dr. Brosseau School, she has formed meaningful connections with her students and fellow staff members.
“I find immense joy in being a part of the personal and academic growth of my students,” she said.
This is evident in her dynamic lesson plans drafted with every students’ unique learning needs in mind.
Durocher chose Catholic Education because of the sense of community it cultivates through shared faith.
“This special bond not only brings us closer together, but also creates a warm and welcoming environment where my students and I can grow and develop our faith journey together,” she said.
The ASBA Edwin Parr Award is presented to first-year teachers across the province for their dedication and passion for providing excellent education in Alberta. A winner is announced in each zone, with Durocher named as Lakeland Catholic’s nominee for Zone 2/3.
When asked how it feels to be nominated for the accolade, Durocher said, “I am happy to be recognized for doing something that I am so passionate about. It has been such a fulfilling and validating career so far.”
She added, “It has been a wonderful journey. I have loved working in such a welcoming, kind, and caring environment surrounded by so many amazing and talented teachers that I look up to.”
In addition to fostering an environment that supports the growth and learning of all of her students, Durocher is dedicated to continuing to expand her own knowledge through professional development.
Marion said, “She actively seeks out opportunities to enhance her teaching practice, collaborates with colleagues, and remains informed of current educational trends and best practices. This underscores her passion for continuous learning and her dedication to delivering the highest quality education to her students.”
Outside of supporting her students in the classroom, Durocher joins them on the court as coach of the Grade 5/6 girls’ basketball team.
Marion wrote, “As Rebecca embarks on her teaching career, it is evident that she has found her true calling. Her enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication make her a valuable asset to the education community, and I have no doubt that she will continue to positively impact the lives of her students for years to come.”
